2021 Spring Season Recap
The MCC Wolves soccer team completed the spring season with 7-5-1 record and their fifth straight NJCAA Region XVI Final. The Wolves started the season strong with three wins against East Central College, St. Charles Community College and Mineral Area College. MCC then lost the next four games, often playing with limited subs due to injuries. When healthy, the Wolves finished the season playing their best soccer. Scoring goals was an important factor in their resurgence. MCC defeated East Central 3-0 and Jefferson College 5-3, before dispatching Mineral Area 4-0 in the NJCAA Region XVI Quarterfinal and State Fair Community College 4-1 in the Region XVI Semifinal. This set up a rematch of the 2019 Region XVI Final with St. Louis Community College.
The game against St. Louis Community College was one of the best games in MCC women's soccer history. The Wolves were down 0-2 with under four minutes left in regulation before goals by Isabella Hanke and Elisah Miller tied the game. The score remained deadlocked 2-2 in overtime and went to penalty kicks. Both teams made their first five penalty kicks. Unfortunately, the Wolves missed their sixth kick while St. Louis made theirs to advance to the NJCAA Central District Final.
The NJCAA Region XVI coaches recognized several MCC players for their high level of play. Mary Delgado and Charity Carnahan were voted to the NJCAA All-Region XVI First Team, while Elisah Miller and Karina Vela earned NJCAA All-Region Second Team honors. Mary and Charity were team captains for the Wolves. Each also made the Dean's Honor Role during the 2020-2021 academic year. Mary helped the team keep possession in the midfield with her excellent passing range and calmness with the ball, while Charity has a dynamic ability to beat players one-on-one and score from distance. If voting were done after the playoffs, and not before, Elisah may have also earned first team honors. She scored five goals in three playoff games, including the game tying goal to send the championship game into overtime. Karina helped anchor the back line with stellar goalkeeping, posting four shutouts and making 67 saves.
Additional recognition goes to Mya Sams, Tatum Anderson, Anna Neace, Hollyn Achens, Celeste Cummins, Mariah Magdziak, Jennifer Ruiz, Elena Tamayo, and Isabella Hanke! With low team numbers, the dedication shown by these student-athletes helped make the season a success. The resilience necessary to bounce back from a four-game losing streak, as well as score two goals in the closing minutes of the NJCAA Region XVI Final, has set a foundation for future success for the MCC Wolves! Go Wolf Pack!
