Don Motley Coach of the Year Award
CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH HUGHES!
MCC Head Softball Coach Autumn Hughes was recently awarded the Don Motley Coach of the Year Award. On March 28, 2024, Autumn was presented with the award on the Kauffman Stadium field in front of a sell-out Royals Opening Day crowd.
The Don Motley Coach of the Year Award is given to a volunteer that works to grow the game of softball in the urban core through working with young athletes ages 13 and under. This award is presented to someone who teaches young players leadership, promotes teamwork, and the importance of a positive attitude on and off the field through the game of softball.
Through RBI Kansas City, Autumn has been successful in increasing the number of instructional clinics and staffing those clinics for the RBI program. She serves as a coach for her 8U team (the ABCs), as well as a coach for the RBI regional traveling team. Boys & Girls Club of KC administrator, Kary Kankey, nominated Coach Hughes because "she is a huge advocate of RBI and teaching softball to kids." Autumn's focus in serving as a volunteer with the program is keeping fun in the game for the young kids so they continue to enjoy and play. For the older age group, she "gives back" by helping players improve their skills, and shares her college experiences, as both a coach and a player. Ultimately, Autumn hopes that she can have "a positive impact on the next generation of softball athletes," by promoting "mental health, confidence and positivity."
We say, JOB WELL DONE COACH HUGHES! So proud of you!
